Tonight my mother left me;
I don’t know where she went.
With all the other grown-up bats
She swooped into ascent.
They do this every single night,
Much to our young dismay;
They’re with us when the sky is bright
But when the sun goes ’way,
One first flies to clear the coast
And check for predators.
Then when the sky is free from harm,
The rest are followers.
They leave us babies all alone
To wonder at our fate
And though we chirp and make some sounds,
All we can do is wait.
